Alem – support of young talents

We would like to remind you that acceptance of works for participation in the Third Poetical Competition in the state language will end within one and half of a month. Poems may be sent till May 01, 2013 to alem@thebig.kz. The main expert is famous poet, writer, journalist, secretary and chairman of the Children Literature Union of Writers of Kazakhstan Sultan Kali. You can learn the rules and terms of the competition here.

According to the results of the first and second competitions, the book of poems of young authors was published. The book consists of the poems written by young authors, who became the best among all applicants according to the results of choice. The books were sent to the schools, where study laureates, and to local education authorities.

The winners of the verbal competition besides the grand prize, notebooks, received grants of Alem Program by Saby Foundation for education in prestigious universities of the country.

Almost one month has passed since Medet Shayakhmetov, a participant of the Alem program and a winner of the international grant of Saby Charitable Foundation, joined the future generation of film directors in the most innovative and dynamic center of film science – the New York Film Academy which is distinguished by the internationality of its students and the highly professional teaching staff.

From the first days Medet has plunged into the subject “Film director” gaining invaluable experience in film production not only at lectures but also at practical lessons. He works with a 16 mm camera, prepares mise en scene projects, writes script drafts and makes photoscripts. In workshops of the school students are given an opportunity to develop their creative abilities as best as they can and become film directors of their own little films. But it is equally important to obtain comprehensive experience of work on the filming ground in the team acting let us say as a cameraman or an assistant.

All academic programs of the Academy are aimed at development of personal and team performance along with formation of professional skills. Medet has 3 year ahead for it – 6 terms of intense, but very interesting student life in New York and Los Angeles!

The “Saby” Charity Foundation announces the beginning of The Third Child Poetry Contest in the official language of the Republic of Kazakhstan (“the Contest”)

Term of the Contest
The Contest will be held from January 1, 2013 till May 1, 2013.

Open participation in the Contest
The Contest is open to young writers up to 24 years, writing in the Kazakh language. Place of residence, citizenship and nationality do not matter

Announcement of the results of the Contest will be published at web-sites of the Contest on June 1, 2013

Purpose of the Contest
1. Drawing of public attention to modern child poesy
2. Revelation of intensity, beauty, clarity and depth of the Kazakh language to public
3. Promotion of the Kazakh language as a literary and ethical basis of the Kazakh culture
4. Discovery of talented modern Kazakh-speaking poets, and introduction of their works to public, theorists of literature and publishers
5. The possibility of financial support in publishing their works in the Book of child poems, assistance in their creative development and awareness

Awards
The main winner will receive The Prize – a notebook and the possibility to get tuition fee in educational institution paid for account of the Saby Foundation after graduation from high school

Conditions of the Contest
Poetic works written in the Kazakh language of any genre, both previously published and never published, of a reasonable duration are allowed for participation in the Contest.
Poems may be on various themes.
Each participant may submit up to three of his best poems

Ethical requirements to material submitted by a participant of the Contest
It is prohibited to publish materials that:
– Contain uncontrolled vocabulary;
– Are of extremist nature;
– Affect honor and dignity of particular people;
– Are of pornographic and sexual nature;
– Cause psychological traumas to children;
– Are of nationalistic, racial or any other similar nature;
– Are of antireligious and extremist nature;
– Are of depressing nature

Participants of the Contest bear individual responsibility for violation of third parties’ copyright

Application of a participant

A participant of the Contest shall send a letter by email or mail addressed to Organizers. A letter shall contain:
– An Application, which represents an absolute consent with gratuitous publication of his/her works at web-sites of the Contest or in the Book of child poems; (attached)
– Files with the works
– Participant photo

Upon receipt of a participant’s letter his/her Application and works will be considered preliminarily by Organizers of the Contest, after which a participant will receive a confirmation from Organizers of the Contest if his/her works are accepted for the Contest

Executive bodies of the Contest
Organizers undertake to execute directly measures for organization and holding of the Contest.
Organizers may form jury and editorial staff of the Contest at their own discretion.

Editorial staff of the Contest may:
Carry out preliminary selection of poems for the Contest.
Editorial staff of the Contest does not take a duty to edit poems received for the Contest.
Editorial staff of the Contest is not responsible for content of poems received for the Contest.

Organizers of the Contest have a right to:
Publish at Organizers’ web-site selected works of each author, for which purpose authors shall give their written consent in the Application.
Use materials of the Contest in the working activity of Organizers

The results of the Contest will be:
– Announcement of the winner of the Contest;
– Awarding the Prize – a notebook to the winner;
– Publication of work of the winner on web-sites of Organizers;
– Coverage of the results of the Contest.

Organizers of the Contest reserve a right to make additional incentives to outstanding works at all stages of the Contest

New York…What are the brightest associations which induces the name of this city? You are right – infinite perspectives!

It is not difficult to imagine the 18 year old boy’s storm of emotions, who will go to study in the famous New York Film Academy! The fortunate possessor of the international educational grant from Saby Foundation within the framework of the Alem Young Talents Support Program became Medet Shayakhmetov. After the New Year, Medet will start his education in the Academy under “Stage Direction” Program.

The famous movie school offers the time-proved method of education from honored teachers, master classes with world famous stars, training on modern professional equipment, unique experience and deep knowledge. Today many Hollywood stars prefer this high rating educational institution for their children, among the stars are: Steven Spielberg, Peter Bogdanovich, Al Pacino, Jamie Foxx, Jodie Foster, Robert Downey Jr., Stephen Frears, George Romero, Susan Sarandon, Tim Robinson, Kevin Kline, Pierce Brosnan etc.

Less than in a month the beginning Alem participant will cross over the world and find himself in the world center of art, fashion and business, where millions of people from different parts of our planet dream to go.

We hope that our young countryman will become a real pride of Kazakh cinematograph and one day he will be awarded with “Oscar” for the best foreign movie!

Having started the Alem Young Talents Support Program two years ago we, at the same time, created on website www.alemthebig.kz the card catalogue of personal data of Alem participants, which includes the forms of best participants.

Alem Base is the interactive space for information sharing and interfacing between talented young people and persons, who are interested directly in their achievements, potential employers, producers, investors. The portal has 5 sections: “Great Stage”, “Captured Image”, “Young Specialists”, “Inquisitive Mind” and “Physical Culture” in which the applicants can widely present their talents, skills, experience and publish other important information on their personal web pages.

From all received requests no more than 10 % of resume of most interesting and perspective young persons, according to Alem Program experts’ opinion, are showed on the site. Rarely, the forms of applicants, who do not receive grants from Saby Foundation for one reason or another, but who are worth in the highest degree, are listed.

Such electronic card catalogue can become an efficient instrument in establishing of communicative contacts corresponding the requests and expectations of all interested parties.

Azamat Malyshov from Rudny city, a new participant of the Alem Young Talents Support Program, joined the ranks of ‘singing Alem participants’.

Two years ago, upon the graduation of Kostanai State University, Azamat made an unexpected for all but very desirable and fateful choice: he decided to enter the vocal department of Almaty Music Conservatory and to become a singer. The study at pre-entry courses strengthened his intention; moreover, the chance to obtain a study grant was rather high, as according to the entrance examination results, he received 85 points. But new articles of the education law, introduced in 2011, nearly broke all his dreams of stage, because now state grants are not rewarded to those who already have higher education. The financial situation of the Malyshovs does not allow to pay for the education 4,000 c.u. per annum.

But as the folk wisdom tells: “When one door closes, another opens”. The most important thing is to find it and knock at it. It was exactly as the resolute young man did, addressing Saby Charitable Foundation with a request to help him in the difficult situation. Having auditioned the young man, the expert of the Alem Program, famous musician, composer and producer Rinat Gaisin evaluated his talent and recommended him as a young talent worth supporting.

Today, having overcome all difficulties and stresses, Azamat successfully studies at Kurmangazy Kazakh National Conservatory under the grant of Saby Foundation and knows for sure that miracles happen, you should just truly believe in it.

Ernest Hemingway said: “The person subduing his spirit is stronger the one conquering cities”.

How hard it was not to tell, not to divulge to the whole world about the event which by its scale has all reasons to become a 2012 event and even not Kazakhstan but Kazakhstan-American. But the founder and president of Saby Charitable Foundation Aselle Tasmagambetova always makes a continuous pause between a fact occurred and its lighting, in order to confidently tell about them after having been reassured by results.

The effect from the social and cultural campaign Nomad’s Way, which took place from February 13 to February 17, 2012 in New York and whose ideological father, organizer and sponsor was Saby Foundation, is already clear and we can proudly tell about it.

Nomad’s Way

During triumphal 2012 Olympic Games, the World Wide Web burst with numerous search requests for the word “Kazakhstan”. The West knows little about our country associating it, first of all, with a vast territory, oil and gas. But besides mineral resources and virgin corners of wild nature, we have other things to present to the world. Our country is unique. It is young, being independent for only 20 years but, at the same time, the art of Kazakh ancestors has a deep history. Not every modern person from Kazakhstan knows this part of national ethnos, let alone overseas connoisseurs.

Saby Foundation set a goal to present to the world a rich historic heritage and uniqueness of Kazakhstan, to show the possibility of successful integration of the East and West by the example of our country, where paths of many civilizations, which made possible the cultural cross-fertilization of peoples and nations, mingled in complex interlacement.

As a mean for the realization of these purposes Nomad’s Way project, which included two stages, was designed: the exhibition of antique Kazakh jewelry held in Christie’s Auction House and the charitable auction organized in the building of New York Public Library. And where else is it possible to realize such high ideas if not here, in New York, the world center and integration cradle.

The jewelry collection of the nomad period, carefully made by Imangali Tasmagambetov and currently occupying an honorable place at the State Museum of Kazakhstan, was exhibited abroad for the first time. It became a real discovery for the American public. Thousands of visitors, amateurs and professionals revealed with surprise the culture of Central Asia. Nomad way of life left a mark on a spectrum of cultural development of our people. We cannot boast with architectural masterpieces or ancient writings but it is impressive how our ancients, who in fact did not have any constant settlements, reached such a high level in applied arts. The jewelry created mainly for the decoration of women’s suits astound by their creative ideas and multiplicate technologies. Works of ancient nomad masters are unique not only because of their historic value but because of the fullness of symbolism – each detail, each line of a piece of work carries a definite meaning.

Inspired by antique masterpieces, the world-famous jewelry houses of Europe and America – Avakian, de Grisogono, Jacob & Co, Chopard, Chatila have made especially for Saby Foundation the unique adornments created in accordance with the best traditions of Kazakh people. The unrivaled masters of the current jewelry art have made unparalleled products, using in their works features of old specimens, archaeological evidences, ancient petroglyphs, interweaving inexplicably the wealth of historical heritage of the great nation and recognizable personal mastery of contemporary artists.

These adornments were presented as lots at the charity auction, which was immediately called a “grand event” and “discovery of Kazakhstan” by the mass media. It does not surprise as the whole world of New York bohemia gathered in NYPL, a symbolic if not iconic place frontage of which during the whole evening was decorated by Kazakh national ornaments with glowing deep blue and gold luminescence. The event guests were well-known businessmen and politicians, world artists, showmen and society lions, such as Keith Rubinstein and Mike Zoi, Igor Krutoi and Nikolai Baskov, Michelle Rodriguez and Somers Farkas. The concert program included Robin Thicke, Craig David and Raquel Castro. The actress, mega star and triple Oscar nominee Sigourney Weaver willingly agreed to host the evening. The event was supported by the Permanent Mission of the Republic of Kazakhstan under UNO in New York, with personal commitment of the permanent representative Birganym Aitimova who rendered invaluable assistance and contribution. It is symbolic that cultural event held in such high level was timed to the 20th anniversary of the Independence of the Republic of Kazakhstan.

Participants of the auction showed a philanthropic activity taking an interest not only in jewelry lots but also in the works of contemporary Kazakhstan masters, whose fame spread outside our country a long time ago. The attention of connoisseurs was attracted by an exquisite workmanship, complicated technique and tangible spirituality based on myths and legends of the ancient nomads mysteriously mingled by artists in graphics, photos and sculptures. As a result of the auction, the sum in the amount of about 1 million US dollars was raised. All funds were directed for the realization of charitable projects held by Saby Charitable Foundation. Among them, the special place is taken by the Alem Young Talents Support Program which became the main beneficiary of the auction.

The Alem Program is designed for talented and promising young people from Kazakhstan backblocks with the objective to create economic and organizational conditions for their intellectual and creative development, life establishing and social self-realization. The program is to provide children and young people with the equal possibilities to realize their potentials independently of their place of residence. Talents should not be ‘buried’ only because a person with talents lives in a distant village, little town, far away from the so-called ‘civilized’ world. Within the framework of this program every child or young person from any backblock can send to the Foundation a letter with his/her résumé or post it on the specially created website – www.alemthebig.kz, where all inquires are received and considered. The talents and skills of an applicant are estimated by distinguished specialists in different fields of culture, art, science, technique, sport, etc. Summaries of the high professionals allow to find really talented people for whom the Foundation makes all possible to develop their best qualities and to correctly direct them to the future. Saby Charitable Foundation provides those having really unique talents with educational grants in special institutions, allows to take part in competitions, contests, exhibitions and others, offers trainings in leading companies and enterprises.

After holding the Nomad’s Way campaign, over 500 inquiries were sent to the Foundation. After the serious selection, grants were conferred to 27 persons. The work continues and we wait for new talented and brave applicants ready to work hard and achieve high goals. And we will help you. Saby Charitable Foundation
Saby Charitable Foundation has been operating since 2002 having become one of the first foundations in the charitable movement of Kazakhstan. The field of activity of the Foundation can be guessed by its name, the translation of which from the Kazakh language means ‘baby’. Therefore, the main activity covers health of children and their physical development, spirituality and availability of education. Paying attention to the most vulnerable groups of society, Saby Charitable Foundation renders assistance to orphaned children and children left without parental care, talented children from socially unprotected families, people with limited capacities.

History
The experience in the organization of charitable auctions held by Saby Charitable Foundation began in 2008 when, in October, a charitable auction and the exhibition of creative works of Kazakhstan masters were held in London in the world’s most honorable and prestigious auction house Christie’s. This event became significant not only for the Foundation but for the whole Kazakhstan because it opened to the world one of the constituent of the country’s culture: modern art of Kazakhstan. Guests of the event showed a great interest to the presented lots thanks to which the sum in the amount of 1,000,000 US dollars was raised. All funds were directed for the purchase of specialized cars equipped with hydraulic elevators for wheelchairs which were donated to the societies of disabled people of Kazakhstan cities with aiming to organize Invataxi highway transport service which renders free transport services to people with limited capacities. The ‘Decent Life for Disabled People’ Project initiated so successfully still has its continuation. By now, 52 cars have been purchased and delivered to 16 cities of the country, in each of which Invataxi service started to work.

February charitable auction in New York became the second in the history of Saby Charitable Foundation. Its unconditional success once again confirmed that the selected direction of the activity and work methods of the Foundation is right.

On October 5, during the whole day, the twenty-four-hour news channel 24 KZ broadcasted, in the frame of daily five-minute program, in the Social Medium program, which is a project of the creative group of Aport Television Company, the video clip about Saby Charitable Foundation.

The hero was our Alem participant – Medet Shayakhmetov, who in his interview told about the Foundation, himself and our joint plans for the future in the framework of the Alem Program.

Creative work always gives a great pleasure especially when you see the results of this work, moreover if you hold it in your arms, it gives you indescribable joy!

Today, we have a new, still smelling of printing ink, edition of the poetry collection of young poets who passed a serious selection as the best in the poetical contests held by Saby Charitable Foundation in 2011 and 2012. The book includes works of 13 young authors distinguished for their talent and original ideas by our expert in the field of literature, a poet, writer, publicist, secretary and the Chairman of Children’s Literature Board of the Kazakhstan Association of Writers Sultan Kalievich Kaliyev.

The Foundation’s employees took up compiling the collection with great revere and care. Its design reflects the core of the Alem Program: huge perennial tree with massive roots nourishing the head of the tree, which spreads broadwise and skyward as if to reach the heavens. The trunk embodies a very ancient sign – a spiral, the symbol of a great creative life power. The position of Saby Charitable Foundation logotype at the bottom of the tree means genuine persistence and permanence in this impetuously changing world, support to all petals – young talents, the white color of which means purity of intentions and the beginning of life journey. Some light-colored petals vary in color, standing out from the main mass, which symbolizes ingenuity, distinction and in some degree the uniqueness of talents. Inhomogeneous complex cover background symbolizes the Universe outside and inside you, flight of thoughts and fantasy. In general, the conception represents the strong link between the past, present and future.

We would like to introduce to you a beginning but we are sure that a very perspective producer, about whom the world cinematography will talk in future. Medet Shayakhmetov, a second-year student of the Kazakh National Academy of Arts named after T. Zhurgenov, is like a ‘one-man band’ inspiring all around with his energy and optimism. He proves the proverb about the fact that ‘a gifted person is good at everything’. Medet is a diploma winner of inexhaustible quantity of city, republican and international vocal competitions; he goes in for skateboard and beatbox, he is the author of many designer works in the style of graffito, he makes motion graphic art, earns money making promo videos and video clips. But the young man dedicated his life to the profession of cross-cutting filmmaking, the education by which is paid by Saby Charitable Foundation currently, and, telling in confidence, the Foundation considers a question about the continuation of his education abroad.

Also we would like to tell you about the young poetess Karlyga Temirgali, a new participant of the Alem Program. We got acquainted or better to say ‘found’ this girl in a distant village of Atyrau region during the business trip of our employee which was arranged in order to find new talents in the depth of the country. The verses of the young poetess have been already publishing in the local newspapers and not once sounded in lyrical programs of the national radio. But Karlyga should be developed and get a quality education in order that her teachers’ experience and long trainings will help her to make her skill perfect. The education at Al-Farabi Kazakh National University in the faculty of journalism is the possibility for creative development and professional formation. Our foundation finances this education thus giving support to the student and accepting her as an Alem participant.

And the last one is Timur Aldybergenov. Many of you have already acquainted with his lyrical baritone by his appearances on the great concerts broadcasting on television, the opportunity of participation in which was afforded by Saby Charitable Foundation. Also Timur as a part of MEZZO band reached the final and became the second finalist in the singing TV show ‘X-factor’. Natural charm and a great voice of the vocalist fascinate almost all. The young man studied classical singing at the Kazakh National Academy of Arts named after T. Zhurgenov on account of our sponsor support. Recently we have learned that Timur dreams about cinema. No sooner said than done: Akhan Satayev, an honorary expert of the Alem Program and famous Kazakhstan movie director invited him to a movie test. Dreams come true!
